A toy library works much like a conventional book library except it's toys that are borrowed not books!

CCS Waikato's Toy Library was the very first in New Zealand, set up in the early 70s by Gillian Gorick who stills finds time to help out at stocktakes.

There are are more than 200 community toy libraries around NZ, but the CCS Toy Library differs in that it's specially for children with disabilities/delays. Play material numbers more than 1000 items, including small and large toys, puzzles, audio, music and video tapes, books, CD roms, games......

Apart from a small collection of 'switch-adapted' items, the toys are just like the ones you'd find in a community toy library or in the toy shops. The point of difference is the way the toys are used: to help develop a particular skill a child is 'working on' (with the Early Intervention service the family are using).

How do I join up? Who can join?

Anyone supporting a child (or older person) with a disability/delay may join the Toy Library. Contact Kathy to arrange a time to visit the Library to check whether it'll meet your needs and whether the Toy Library rules suit your lifestyle. If you decide to become a member you'll be asked to sign your commitment to keeping to the Toy Library rules.

What are my responsibilities as a borrower?

* to return loans on time (so others have a chance to borrow them)

* to return toys clean (so other children don't receive yucky toys)

* to return toys complete (e.g. if they're loaned out with 5 pieces, they come back with 5)

What about membership costs?

$20 p.a. There is no extra loan fees. However, families pay the cost of replacing a missing piece, the cost of replacing a damaged or lost toy or drawstring bag.

How does the borrowing and return of toys work?

That's why it's important to arrange a visit to the Toy Library - so you can see the loansheet and see how the toys are shelved. In short, toys are loaned for 2 weeks for City borrowers and up to a month for out-of-towners. You can borrow 3 toys plus a book or a puzzle. You record these and your returned toys on a loansheet. Toy returns are placed under the sink (you can clean toys at the Library) for me to recheck before they are loaned out again.

Toys are clearly marked with codes, a contents list and the type of batteries needed (we don't supply those).

Where are we located? What about opening times?

At the CCS Waikato building on Claudelands Road, Hamilton, near the Cosmopolitan Club. Opening hours are 8.30am - 5pm, Monday to Thursday but the office closes at 4.30pm on Fridays.
